Tunis

 

 

Tunis has been the capital city of Tunisia since 20 September 1159 when the Almohad dynasty used the city as their base. The Hafsid dynasty continued to use Tunis as the capital and the tradition has continued, through independence in 1956, until today.

   

Situated on a coastal plain in the north of the country, at the base of the gulf of Tunis, and divided by the lake of Tunis, the city is surrounded by hills. Although, the ‘Tunisois’ who inhabit the oldest part of the town, number 728 453 , the total polulation of greater Tunis is 2 412 500 .

The city of Tunis is built on a series of hills on the shore of Lake Tunis – the main hills (Notre-Dame de Tunis, Ras Tabia, La Rabta, La Kasbah, Montfleury et La Manoubia) have elevations of 50m .

Head office: ACT has been based in Tunisia since 1982. The head office in Tunis serves as an administrative base for our teams across the country.

The ACT team: The ACT team in Tunis began with the arrival in 1982 of ACTs first workers. Alongside its administrative and support work individual team members are involved in projects in the fields of integrated education, health and ‘people at risk’.
