is a simple but beautiful city located at the door of the Sahara desert, in the steppes of central Tunisia, near a road junction literally linking the four corners of the country. This road dates from ancient times, as it used to be a caravan route. Sidi Bouzid is also the capital of a province with the same name. The population in the city is about 90.000, and there are about 409.700 inhabitants in the whole province, according to 2009 data.
In spite of cyclical periods of drought, the economy of Sidi Bouzid is based mainly on irrigated agriculture with chiefly small family-owed farms producing olive oil, vegetables, cereal, fruit and fodder. Besides commerce,  There is an industrial zone housing 38 industrial enterprises operating essentially in textiles. Other zones are planned by the Province Council.
There is a regional hospital in town, many shops and one main university, the crown of a well developed school network that offers education to young people of all ages.

ACT started its work in Sidi Bouzid in the 80´s, with doctors, nurses and midwives focusing on the rural population. In time ACT branched out to working with young people with learning disabilities and into rural development.
