Sfax

Second city, harbour and centre of Tunisian commerce, Sfax is also the county town of the governorate. Its ramparts and medina and market stalls of traditional crafts are all tourist attractions. Sfax’s economy is essentially based on commerce from the harbour and cultivation of the olive trees which cover a large part of the region. The town, which also acts as the capital of the South of Tunisia, has around 300,000 inhabitants.  Arts and crafts also contribute to the town’s prosperity and the arts have an important place in city life.

The Kerkennah islands, off Sfax, are famous  for both their scenic beauty and for octopus. Sfaxians retreat there for the weekend to escape urban pollution.

The ACT team: ACT’s team in Sfax is involved in various projects, principally in the disability sector, partnering with local organisations and local communities:
The ‘Fellouque’ and ‘Salt’ projects in partnership with ‘Maison de France’ seeks to bring attention to environmental issues and the world of the disabled
The ‘Olive’ project seeks to raise awareness in society of the lives of those who are ‘different’. Numerous interactions between the world of the arts and people with disabilities  are bringing changes in outlook to a population which has, to date, ignored part of itself.
Psychologists, educators, specialists and artists are working  within, or in partnership with, ACT. And both private and public initiatives are being ‘owned’ by the people of Sfax.
